 Press Releases

  • Russula supplied the water treatment plant engineering and electrical equipment for Nucor Steel's new 1.2 MTpy plate mill in Brandenburg, KY. This is the single, largest capital investment undertaken in the history of Nucor and ranks as one of the largest-ever for the state of Kentucky.

Civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, electrical and control equipment and on-site services for the were included within the water treatment plant scope of supply. As of March 2023, the water treatment plant is currently undergoing commissioning. Nucor Brandenburg marks the 26th water treatment solution Russula has supplied worldwide.

  • Leading Canadian Merchant Bar Quality producer Gerdau Cambridge chose Russula for the electrical upgrade of the finishing end. Thirty-six DC&AC drives were replaced with the ABB DCS880 & ACS880 series, which improved performance and troubleshooting.

Russula supplirf the new drives, electrical and software engineering, installation advisement, and commissioning support. The new drive line ups and auxiliary equipment wrtr designed to match the existing footprint to reuse power and motor feeder cables. Nine motors were changed from DC to AC. Modifications were made to the HMI and existing PLC control system.

The new drives were put into operation in 2022. Russula’s partnership with the Gerdau Cambridge plant has spanned over a decade.

  • Liberty Steel & Wire has placed an order with Russula for the full Mill Pulse® suite, the Russula solution for Manufacturing Execution Systems, designed exclusively for rolling steel. The wire rod mill is in Peoria, IL.

The Mill Pulse® MES solution is framed within the broader scope of an electrical and automation upgrade for the two-strand wire rod mill, which will improve mill performance, plant-wide information gathering, and reporting. It will interface with the new Russula automation system.

Mill Pulse® will enable Liberty Steel & Wire to organize plant production and tracking, manage raw materials and finished products, collect and control data, reporting, and KPI monitoring.  It will provide Liberty with a simple, consistent, and intuitive tool for pacing production; having a global view of production pace provides an efficiency goal for the rolling mill staff to achieve the final customer demand. Mill Pulse® will also simplify the internal change over or setup procedure, eliminating nonessential operations, creating standardized work orders and checklists assigned to user roles within the Mill Setup.

  • Gerdau Petersburg contracted Russula to modernize areas in the structural steel mill. The purpose of the upgrade was to replace legacy electrical equipment with modern drives that will improve performance and spare parts availability.

The Multidrive 400 that controls the motors from the cooling bed to the cold shear were replaced with the modern ABB ACS880 series along with drive controlling one of the motors for the fixed cold saw. Russula supplied the drives, engineering, testing, and onsite services such as installation supervision, commissioning, and production support. Commissioning occurred on schedule in the fourth quarter of 2022.

  • Big River Steel Works has awarded Russula the construction of one of the largest water treatment plants (WTP) ever built for the metallurgical sector. The water plant is divided into 13 circuits and will treat daily more than 65 million liters (17M gal) per hour. The WTP is composed of a make-up water treatment area, contact and non-contact cooling circuits, an effluent treatment area and an advanced effluent recovery system.

This water treatment plant represents the know-how acquired by Russula over many years and includes new processes such as the effluent recovery system, which applies the latest techniques in water treatment. As a result, the new plant will significantly exceed the environmental requirements and drastically reduce water consumption by recovering the vast majority of the water discharged into the environment.

Consequently, the new modern mill will apply to become LEED® certified. BRS, which has an eco-friendly Russula WTP installed and currently in operation, received this certification back in 2017, and recently received the first-ever ResponsibleSteel™ site certification, which sets a global benchmark for leading practices in environmental, social and governance (ESG) responsibility for steel production.

  • Mill Pulse® MES
The Mill Pulse® Suite is a Manufacturing Execution System designed exclusively for the steel industry....

  • The Mill Pulse® Suite is an industrial management software designed by Russula to improve a rolling mill’s efficiency. Production is tracked through every stage of the process, from the raw material to the labeling of the finished product. In addition, Mill Pulse® provides daily and customized reports for better decision making, production optimization and work efficiency through an intuitive, easy to use interface.

Like in Formula 1, a skilled operator needs a skilled team who need the right information at the right time to make the right decisions. Mill Setup provides condition monitoring data in real time to maximize performance and productivity. The Roll Shop module automatically tracks data from the PLCs - working hours, rolled tons and detects when consumable parts need to be replaced. Working together, Roll Shop and Mill Setup Module displays availability of rolls and stands according to the current mill layout, cost, and setup time. Mill Pulse® manages the entire life cycle of equipment and consumables. When it’s time for a size change the Mill Setup Module generates a checklist of work orders with all the configured required activities.
