Titan Metallurgy is your source for steel product testing.

Titan Metallurgy is a premier lab source for metallurgical testing. Titan test technicians and metallurgists are highly trained and knowledgeable to not only provide testing services, but also to be a conduit from you to the results you are looking for. We use state-of-the-art equipment to provide you with the most accurate, and repeatable, results industry wide.

Common testing includes tensile, hardness, Charpy impact, grain size, inclusion ratings, decarburization, graphite classification, and general microstructure ratings. We also offer failure investigations, including the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an EDS detector. We are equipped to handle production volumes, as well as strict time constraints, all at competitive rates. Contact us today for your testing needs!

 Products

  • Tensile Testing
Titan Metallurgy provides tensile testing for steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and various other metals. Material is machined and tested by highly trained personnel on calibrated, repeatable, and accurate equipment....

  • Titan Metallurgy's tensile testing capability is perfect for the support of our customer's demand of both single test requirements, as well as PPAP or full production support. Our capacity includes many variaties of sample shapes and sizes, all built around the demand that we hear clearly: accurate results with timely turnaround. We do these two things well.

Tensile testing involves a precision machined sample that is pulled apart, in one direction, by a machine that measures force while it is pulling. The material is tested until it breaks and the important aspects of the testing, as well as the fractured sample, are documented and reported. The standard output of the testing is a tensile strength, yield strength, elongation to fracture, and reduction of area.

There are many different ways to obtain and test tensile samples depending on your sample geometry, size, and product requirements. Standard methods exist under ASTM A370 and ASTM E8 that dictate how to machine and test for tensile properties. Titan Metallurgy adheres to these two standards, as well as any product drawings or other specifications, to provide our customers with an efficient, yet reliable, result.

  • Charpy Impact Testing
Titan Metallurgy provides Charpy impact testing for steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and various other metals. Material is machined and tested by highly trained personnel on calibrated, repeatable, and accurate equipment....

  • Charpy impact testing helps determine your material’s toughness and ductility at various operating temperatures. At Titan Metallurgy we can perform Charpy testing to determine how your material will perform under these various circumstances. Charpy test results tell you the amount of energy your metal absorbs during fracture in the presence of an existing notch.

During the Charpy impact test, a calibrated pendulum swings from a set height and strikes the machined sample, breaking it. The energy transferred to the material can be inferred by comparing the difference in the height of the hammer before and after the fracture (energy absorbed by the fracture event).

Samples are precisely machined before testing and can be thermally controlled in an agitated chiller to -80° C to test the material’s performance under extreme conditions. We also have furnace capabilities to provide elevated temperature conditions.

  • Jominy Testing
Titan Metallurgy has a consistent and dependable Jominy test, suitable for everyday production or as a referee analysis. All of our testing is continuously monitored by metallurgists to ensure our data and testing remains accurate and reliable....

  • Jominy testing confirms a material's ability to hit a specific hardenability through quenching. Our Jominy testing meets ASTM A255 and is commonly used to compare against hardenability bands in ASTM A304. We provide a full J-value profile in metric or imperial measurement incraments, as well as a representative graph of the Jominy values. If requested, we can also map the Jominy results with the hardenability band of you choosing in the report. With this, you have an instant look at whether your material is meeting requirements.
  • Metallography and Microstructure
Titan Metallurgy offers a multitude of microstructure evaluations for iron and steel products. Among these offerings are inclusion ratings, grain size, decarburization, constituent rating, graphite flake analysis, and more....

  • The classification and quantifying of inclusions in steel is a very important factor in steel manufacturing. We can perform inclusion content/ratings on steel samples to common international standards such as ASTM E45, DIN 50602, ISO 4967, and SAE J422. Through the use of automated polishing, and a microscope and software known to be the gold-standard of inclusion rating, we can take care of any volume of sampling and provide quick and accurate inclusion severity ratings to many specifications at once.

Grain size has a large effect on many of the properties that are used for engineering a product out of an iron or steel product. We have the capability to perform average grain size measurements to common international standards such as ASTM E112. Through use of our metallographic preparation and optical microscope, we can report a grain size number accompanied with a photomicrograph of your sample.

Carbon depletion can occur in uncontrolled atmospheres at high temperatures, causing your material to have a difference in carbon content at the surface. We can perform an analysis of decarburization to common international standards such as ASTM E1077. You will receive a report that includes the depth of complete, partial, total decarburization, and a photomicrograph of the surface of your sample.

Microstructure constituents can often show up in requirements for wrought or cast products. Whether it is an as-cast or as-rolled microstructure requirement, or if a heat treatment is needed to gain the correct structure, we are capable of analyzing items such as graphite flake formation, percent ferrite, percent pearlite, and percent spheroidization. We perform these to common standards such as ASTM A247, ASTM A892, and ASTM F2282, but also use automated software evaluation when standards are not available.

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy
Titan Metallurgy has invested in state-of-the-art technology when it comes to metallurgical testing and investigation. A scanning electron microscope provides the ability to look closely at samples and even determine elemental make-up of what we find....

  • Our scanning electron microscope is flexible enough to handle oily, nonconductive, and traditional metallic samples through various vacuum modes, yet precise enough to view specimens at 100,000 times magnification. It has one of the largest chambers on the commercial market with a width of 12 inches and it can accommodate samples up to 10lbs. Both secondary electron imaging and backscatter electron imaging is available in most conditions, allowing for the best combination of elemental contrast combined with surface topography imaging. With electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping and point identification abilities, your samples can be chemically or elementally identified, enabling the classification of bulk chemistry, contaminates, or material phases.

Our SEM is located in its own dedicated room, designed to provide a clean environment for pristine sample investigation. With a 50-inch monitor and ample room around the equipment, the space can comfortably accommodate a group. This makes it perfect for collaborative work, forensic analysis, or other team projects. Remote sessions via web-sharing can accommodate schedule or travel restrictions and subsequent data can be shared via secure transactions.

Our microscopes are operated by degreed metallurgists who are highly trained to provide you with the technical assistance and interpretation you need to move forward.
