Iron & Steel Applications Overview

 Press Releases

  • AMETEK Land’s SPOT pyrometers / thermometers fall into three broad types:

    • Mono
    • Ratio
    • Application

The best one to choose will depend on the product surface you want to measure, and the process environment.

Understanding the Range of SPOT Pyrometers Available for Non-Contact Infrared Temperature Measurement
A single wavelength Mono pyrometer is the simplest and cheapest solution, but for accurate temperature measurements you must have a clear view of the product and know the emissivity of the surface

The advantage of a dual wavelength Ratio pyrometer is that it can correct for dust, dirty windows, and for unknown or changing emissivity - as long as both wavelength channels are affected proportionally.

A more complex Application specific pyrometer is required for certain surfaces such as aluminium and galvanised / galvannealed steel where emissivity changes significantly with wavelength.

Emissivity is the key parameter to understand for accurate infrared temperature measurement.

The emissivity of a surface is the proportion of radiation that surface emits, compared to the maximum theoretically possible according to the laws of physics (the ‘blackbody radiation’).  Emissivity is the opposite of reflectivity, so a highly reflective smooth mirror-like surface has emissivity close to zero.  Rough, dark matt surfaces have high emissivity.  If you have two objects of the same temperature, one bright and shiny, one dark and matt, the dark one will feel hotter if you hold your hand in front of it as it radiates a higher proportion of its internal heat.  An infrared pyrometer measures the same effect that you feel.  With a Mono thermometer, you need to enter the correct emissivity value for the surface so that the pyrometer can correct for the reduced emission level, whereas Ratio and Application pyrometers can automatically fit and even calculate the emissivity.

Dirt and dust that obscure the view of a pyrometer have the same effect on the measurement as reduced emissivity – both reduce the amount of radiation collected.  If the level of obscuration remains constant, it would be possible to enter a correction factor as for emissivity and continue to use a Mono thermometer.  However, in many cases clouds of dust come and go, viewing windows become gradually dirtier between cleaning cycles.  A Ratio pyrometer is the device to choose in this case, which can automatically adjust for the changing obscuration level.

Ratio and Application pyrometers measure the infrared radiation received at two or more wavelengths – so they collect more data than a single wavelength Mono pyrometer.  If the surface emissivity or transmission level of the optical path is changing, there are effectively two unknowns to calculate: the proportion of radiation arriving at the instrument, and the temperature.  Given two measurement wavebands, it is possible to eliminate the reduced signal level from the equations and measure temperature accurately despite changing emissivity or obscuration.  In the SPOT range of Ratio pyrometers, the signal level is also provided as an output, and can be configured with an alarm as a ‘dirty window alert’.

An Application pyrometer is a more complex variant of the Ratio pyrometer, for materials whose emissivity changes with wavelength in a non-linear way.  In this case there are multiple unknowns: the temperature, the emissivity at each wavelength, and the complex relationship between the emissivity change at those different wavelengths.  For each temperature measured by an Application pyrometer, the instrument is calling on a huge ‘3D Dataset’ of historically measured values of temperature, emissivity and radiance at each waveband of the instrument.  For this reason, Application thermometers are only available for specific industrial process materials that we have thoroughly researched, such as the SPOT AL EQS for aluminium extrusion, quench and strip, and the SPOT GS for galvanised and galvannealed steel strip.

  • AMETEK Land has continued innovating its popular SPOT AL EQS aluminium applications pyrometer by introducing two new modes for forging and forming applications.

SPOT AL EQSThe new F and F Mg (magnesium) algorithms extend AMETEK Land’s capabilities to provide accurate, repeatable temperature measurements to additional aluminium production and processing industries. The new algorithms are suitable for reheating and secondary processing applications with thicker alloy-dependent oxide layers.

The new F and F Mg modes of SPOT AL EQS are well suited to billet temperature measurements at the entry to the extrusion press or during other aluminium pre-heating processes. They provide the most accurate digital temperature readings of low and variable emissivity aluminium to ensure optimised process speed, process efficiency, and high-quality products with minimal scrap.

Dr. Fiona Turner, Physics Section Manager for AMETEK Land, explains: “We are continually innovating within our SPOT AL EQS range, and this latest development is designed to ensure that our cutting-edge pyrometer can be utilised in an even wider range of aluminium applications. This latest development has been widely tested in conjunction with secondary aluminium producers and has proven highly effective. It significantly enhances the pyrometer’s scope and opens up new measurement opportunities.”

The SPOT AL EQS pyrometer now offers five measurement modes, with dedicated pre-set algorithms that provide the most accurate digital temperature readings of low and variable emissivity aluminium. This ensures optimised press speed and high-quality products with minimal scrap.

Potential F and F Mg applications include:

    • Billet profile
    • Ingot/sales (re)heat furnace
    • Pre-heating and forging
    • Induction heating/heat treatment
    • Mounting/shrinking
    • Preheating for coating/bending

SPOT AL EQS is an advanced non-contact infrared pyrometer providing a single sensor solution for aluminium extrusion, strip mill, forming/forging, and further processing.

A highly accurate and stable digital pyrometer, the SPOT AL EQS uses AMETEK Land’s cutting-edge SPOT technology and unique, advanced data-processing algorithms to measure aluminium temperature at an extruder press exit; quench and billets; strip mill; forging/forming applications; and forging/forming applications with high-magnesium content alloys.

Offering measurements ranging from 200 °C (392 °F) to 700 °C (1292 °F), the pyrometer integrates with control systems to optimise throughput at the press or mill.

Data is made immediately available via a rear display or via a web server. Video cameras within the pyrometer and remote access to all features enable the user to view, configure, and focus the pyrometer locally or remotely.

Combining Ethernet, Modbus TCP, video, analogue, and alarm outputs in a single device, the SPOT AL EQS is designed specifically for measuring the temperature of aluminium in a range of processing applications.
  • AMETEK Land has enhanced its flare stack monitoring thermal imaging solution with the inclusion of its innovative, advanced image processing IMAGEPro software to deliver accurate and reliable monitoring of the flame and the pilot light at the flare stack.

AMETEK Land’s flare stack monitoring solution includes an infrared imager that produces high-resolution thermal images of the target, from any distance. This allows the camera to be positioned at a safe distance from the flame and makes it easily accessible for installation and maintenance.

The solution’s IMAGEPro software monitors, captures, and displays data from multiple thermal imaging cameras simultaneously to provide real-time analysis and exceptional functionality, delivering state-of-the-art protection against unwanted emissions. Detailed visualisation of the thermal data and the ability to set alarms enables the system to warn if action needs to be taken.

“We’re delighted to bring to the market this latest innovation in flare stack monitoring,” said David Primhak, Director of Development and Product Management for AMETEK Land.  “IMAGEPro offers specific application functionality for exceptional process control. Combined with our highly accurate infrared thermal imaging systems, it ensures that plants can meet flare stack emissions requirements in a safe and efficient operation. It will have wide-reaching benefits for the industry, specifically for chemical, petrochemical, and steel industries, providing more relevant application-specific data to enhance safety and operational efficiency of the flare stack.”

In addition to producing a visual image, AMETEK Land’s imager also detects the infrared radiation emitted from the flame. This means the camera sees the flame, whether it is coloured orclear, no matter the weather.

Flare Stack Monitoring Application Note (EN)
With a wide detection range from 100 °C to 1000 °C (212 °F to 1832 °F), even if the gas composition changes and affects the temperature of the flame, the imager continues to supply an accurate measurement. The range is also high enough to ensure that background heat is ignored, plus it operates in ambient temperatures from -20 °C to 60 °C (-4 °F to 140 °F), making it suitable for installation in almost any location.

The ability to select multiple regions of interest ensures that measurements continue to be made even when the flame is moved by wind conditions. By delivering accurate and reliable monitoring, the solution helps ensure that plants can meet flare stack emissions requirements in a safe and efficient operation.

Details of AMETEK Land’s enhanced application solution can be found in its new Flare Stack Monitoring Application note and accompanying video.

  • SDS - Slag Detection System
The Slag Detection System (SDS) is the proven solution for accurate and timely detection of slag carryover in the steelmaking process, allowing plants to improve product quality, reduce slag carryover and improve operator safety....

  • With over 60 years of application expertise in the steel industry, AMETEK Land's Slag Detection System (SDS) delivers improved yields, higher-quality steel and reduces costly downstream processing. There are additional benefits in reduced ladle refractory wear.

At the end of the tap the levels of slag and steel rapidly reverse. Quick termination of the tap after the alarm has been triggered is necessary to prevent excessive levels of slag in the ladle. SDS uses a high-resolution thermal imaging camera to detect the transition between steel and slag. The dedicated thermal imaging camera has a specific design to survive in the harsh operating conditions and utilizes a particular wavelength to reduce “blackouts” caused by smoke and fume. Data is presented to the operator in real time enabling them to make informed decisions about the tapping process.

Suitable for operators of secondary steel making vessels (e.g. EAF, BOF) including stainless steel. Variants of the system are also available for copperplatinum, upon request. The system can also be used to indicate freeboard height if required.

    IMPROVED PRODUCT QUALITY
Using the SDS has been demonstrated to improve operator response time and consistency at the end of each tap. This results in a typical reduction in slag depths of up to 25% compared to traditional methods of stream monitoring.

    REDUCED DOWNSTREAM PROCESSING COSTS
The cost of additional downstream processing time and materials can be a significant burden on an operating plant. By controlling slag carry-over this costly downstream processing can be reduced or eliminated, improving plant throughput and operating margins.

    AUTOMATIC OPERATION
As the tap commences, the application dedicated software records it, using a stream identification algorithm, producing a data log and graph for quality control. A stream tracking mechanism is included to ensure reliable operation in typical installation conditions. When slag appears, and exceeds an operator defined amount, an alarm is automatically triggers. The system is designed to ensure accurate detection of steel/slag independent of charge weight and without operator intervention.

The Slag Detection System is AMETEK Land’s definitive solution for monitoring and reducing slag carryover in steel production facilities. It is proven to reduce slag carryover, save money and improve operator safety.
