AMETEK Surface Vision now offers remote training courses to provide safe, convenient instructions on how to get the best performance from its industry-leading online surface inspection solutions.
The online training sessions allow customers to discover all the features and benefits of the SmartView defect detection and identification system, building technical proficiency, increasing operational productivity, and maximizing system uptime.
Conducted by highly skilled, experienced professionals, the training is divided into sections for specific job functions or system components. It uses a “live” training system to reinforce the material and focus on particular customer tasks.
Each course typically consists of four-hour sessions held over three consecutive days; they are available for both US and central European office hours.
The subjects covered in the next four months are:
• SmartView Fundamentals
• SmartView Advanced
• SmartView Maintenance and Troubleshooting
These training programs will enable those attending to achieve added benefits from their SmartView system. All that is required is a PC, an internet connection, the Microsoft Teams application, a headset, a large screen, and a webcam for class interaction.
Paul Stuyt, Global Manager of Projects from AMETEK Surface Vision said: “Our expert training courses are designed with the customer in mind, answering any questions that may arise and providing a deeper understanding of our products, systems, and applications.
“With online tuition, customers can learn how to set up their system, inspect live production, display, and report on defects and process conditions, and maintain system health. All of this without the inconvenience and safety risks associated with travel during the current COVID-19 global pandemic.
“For those staff members working from home, there’s no reason for their training and development to stop. We continue to provide everything they need to achieve optimum SmartView performance for their processes.”

A metal processor in the US is now benefiting from more effective data to resolve customer claims and prove material quality, thanks to the capabilities of the AMETEK Surface Vision SmartView Inspection System.
Heidtman Steel, a metal processor based in Toledo, Ohio, processes hot-rolled, cold-rolled, galvanized, and galvannealed steel for a diverse range of industries. As a toll processor, it handles materials from many other companies. Existing inspection systems were old, with limited service options and expensive to upgrade.
To meet customer requirements and provide accurate, clear inspection reporting and data, Heidtman Steel chose SmartView Inspection System to replace its prior one).
SmartView is a proven inspection system, with a large install base around the world. It is backed by a strong service and support team, making it easy to use and maintain.
Chris Theurer, Inspection Specialist at Heidtman Steel’s facility in Cleveland, said: “With SmartView, we get specific defect locations and images that are present on the material being processed through the pickle lines. This data helps us support our customer claims and material rejections. We have proof of the quality of material that we are receiving, and can understand if our pickle lines are causing any defects or if these come from the incoming material.”

AMETEK Surface Vision has implemented a new, next-generation visual collaboration service to provide real-time remote support to customers.
Using remote visual assistance software to create a virtual interactive presence, AMETEK Surface Vision enables its experts to virtually work side-by-side with anyone needing help, anywhere in the world. Customers benefit by seeing an expert in their environment, with both the customer and the expert in the same video stream.
It works by blending two real-time video streams into a merged reality environment. This allows the support team to accelerate the problem diagnosis, and work with the customer to solve it quickly.
Paul Stuyt, Global Manager of Projects, AMETEK Surface Vision, explained: "If a customer is in front of a rack with lots of switches, the tool will allow them to show us the problem. If they point with their finger, we see it on the screen. We can then draw a circle on our screens to show which switch is needed, or super-impose pictures over each other to illustrate what to do."
Beyond being a useful support tool, the software provides a variety of other uses as well. It can be used to support the remote commissioning of surface inspection and web monitoring systems, with Surface Vision experts guiding the customer through installation and set-up.
It can also be used for open-package inspection and unboxing to ensure a delivered crate's contents are correct, allowing AMETEK Surface Vision to explain what each part is as it is unpacked.
AMETEK Surface Vision is looking to widen this approach, with a similar application for remote training already in development.
Paul added: "Even before the COVID-19 pandemic made remote support critical, we were working on ways to widen our range of remote tools for customers, particularly for training. It means we will be able to offer short, 5- to 10-minute sessions on a certain issue or topic, without the time and expense of customers travelling to our site, or vice versa.” To find out more about the remote visual collaboration service contact us here

AMETEK Surface Vision has reinforced its telephone support service with digital tools to provide best-in-class 24/7 emergency technical assistance, globally.

Called Global 24/7, this support system utilizes state-of-the-art remote access, virtual collaboration, and telecommunications tools to dynamically resource technical support from a pool of experts located across the globe. This ensures timely and universal support for AMETEK Surface Vision’s global installation base of thousands of systems and customers.
The typical customers of AMETEK Surface Vision are industrial plants that manufacture metals, paper, plastics, and nonwoven materials, running around the clock with a staff operating on a shift system.
They rely on their automated surface inspection systems. If, for some reason, that system does not function correctly, they may have to stop production.
Global 24/7 is designed to address this issue by taking full advantage of the company’s global support network. Bringing in team members from all regions allows the service to be staffed 24/7 by technical experts and offers customers continuous support wherever located in the world.
Yamina Lansari, Global Manager of Technical Services from AMETEK Surface Vision, said: “The challenge is keeping plants running continuously wherever they are in the world. Time zones and shift patterns can limit the availability of local technical support, should there be a problem requiring immediate attention. However, we know our customers need to be able to access emergency support at any time to avoid expensive downtime. That’s why we’ve further enhanced the support we provide, enabling us to deliver the industry-leading service our customers expect.”
Inspection system customers are offered a choice of purchasing standard business hours support or the Global 24/7 service.
