Taste the world-renowned rhum agricole

Martinique is also known as the rum capital of the world— and with good reason. The island’s 14 distilleries produce the highly sought-after rhum agricole, which holds the prestigious AOC (appellation d’origine contrôlée) designation. By traveling La Route des Grands Rhums to distilleries all over the island, you’ll get a firsthand look at the production process and have opportunities to sample Martinique’s most celebrated rums amid stunning natural surroundings.

It’s no wonder Les Anses-d’Arlet, a quaint fishing village on Martinique’s southwestern coast, is one of the most-visited places on the island. There are three sandy beaches and postcard-perfect views everywhere you look; Saint-Henri des Anses-d’Arlet church, just opposite the boardwalk, is especially picturesque.

Jardin de Balata : A gorgeous garden

This three-hectare park holds 3,000 types of indigenous flora and fauna—including some 300 species of palm trees—just outside of Martinique’s capital. Follow the

multilingual markers through Jean-Philippe Thoze’s landscaped gardens, rolling green fields, and ponds dappled with water lilies and lotus flowers. The suspended pathsand bridges provide an aerial view of the gardens.
