The Meyerhoff Graduate Fellows Program began at UMBC in 1996 with an MBRS-IMSD (Minority Biomedical Research Support – Initiative for Maximizing Student Development) grant from the National Institute of General Medical Science.  In 2007, the Meyerhoff Graduate Fellows Program expanded its efforts to include graduate students  at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Graduate Programs in Life Science (GPILS).  The IMSD Meyerhoff Graduate Fellows Program is open to all U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

The goal of the program is to increase the number of students who receive their Ph.D. in the biomedical and behavioral sciences and who are interested in the advancement of underrepresented minorities in the sciences, particularly at the graduate level.
