A small student body, a diverse faculty and a low student-faculty ratio are factors that promote learning and encourage interaction between students. These unique factors combined with a low cost of living and relatively low cost of education create a highly competitive environment for students applying each year.

Some of the many research areas include: messenger RNA processing, multidrug resistance of cancer cells, vaccine development, microbial pathogenesis, mechanisms of membrane transport, cell signaling, neurovascular/blood brain barrier, drug discovery, pain mechanisms, and substance abuse and addiction. A major theme of the research is translating innovating scientific discoveries into new therapeutic strategies that may ultimately be used to treat diseases.
