Help advance the specialty of dermatologic surgery! ASDS unites education and innovation to encourage and stimulate clinical research and the transfer of new technologies from the research settings to surgical practice through the Cutting Edge Research Grant (CERG) program. The program is an ideal mechanism for the dermatologic surgeon to investigate needed areas of clinical interest such as cosmetic or oncologic surgery. ASDS has taken a proactive approach to positively affecting the future of dermatologic surgery in recommending research on the following Board-directed topics.

• Safety of cosmetic procedures
• Demonstration of patient satisfaction of dermatologic surgery care / dermatologic surgeon care
• Efficacy of screenings in diagnosing skin cancer
• Patient preference for being treated in an outpatient setting

ASDS grants are made to individuals in the practice environment and institutions whose research proposals are of the highest caliber. A maximum total of $100,000 in funding is awarded annually by the ASDS Research Work Group in amounts up to $20,000 per institution. The inaugural Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Reception will be hosted on Friday, October 7 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm.   The evening will begin with a celebration of the amazing accomplishments of the DEI work group, followed by the sharing of experiences from the first-year Rise Up Mentorship mentees and mentors.  We’ll welcome and recognize the outgoing and incoming Rise Up Mentorship participants and the Diversity Ambassadors.   Network with ASDS members who are proud to be a part of the important initiatives launched to promote cultural competency and awareness withing dermatology; increase diversity withing ASDS among members, leaders, volunteers and speakers; and educate underrepresented minority (URM) about general and procedural dermatology.  Over 100 program participants and DEI Ambassadors are invited to attend. 

The ASDS Early-Career Preceptorship Program provides young dermatologists (no more than 10 years post-residency) the opportunity to participate in a short practice visit with an experienced dermatologic surgeon to learn vital skills in patient consultation and assessment, therapy and device selection, procedural nuances, optimizing patient flow, efficiency and productivity improvement, and more.

The goals of the Early-Career Preceptorship Program are to:

• Enhance and complement the skills of ASDS members in areas necessary to conduct optimal patient consultation and assessment, therapy and device selection, procedural nuances and overall patient care.
• Enhance practice-focused business acumen such as optimizing patient flow, decreasing overhead, improving efficiency and productivity, practice expansion and more.
• Facilitate the ability for early-career and experienced ASDS members to partner in positively impacting the specialty of dermatologic surgery and the patients they serve.
• Provide ASDS members, who serve as preceptors, the opportunity to improve their mentoring skills through a unique interface program.

The Future Leaders Network furthers the advancement of young dermatologists, the specialty and the goals of ASDS. The program provides participants with three key mechanisms for learning through:

• Mentorship of future leaders.
• Project work that demonstrates leadership.
• Teachers who impart leadership lessons.

The Future Leaders Network is a year-long curriculum designed to develop leadership competencies of our young dermatologic surgeons (mentees) – typically within five to seven years from residency graduation – so they will be better prepared to assume leadership positions with ASDS, local or national dermatology organizations, or in their community. The program matches up to ten mentees with ten mentors in a one-on-one situation. They learn together as they attend sessions with expert teachers in organizational leadership.

Although only a small group of dermatologic surgeons directly participate in the program, companies benefit from the widespread promotion of the FLN, the projects developed and exposure to future leaders in the specialty.

The ASDS Resident Preceptorship Program provides third-year residents the opportunity to visit an institution or practice of an established dermatologic surgeon. This exclusive ASDS program has proven successful in providing an unconventional learning environment to perfect skills in core areas of practice as well as advancing skills in those areas of the specialty and procedures not previously learned in residency.

The goals of the Preceptorship Program are to:

• Provide a venue for third-year residents to expand their skills and knowledge in a particular technique or surgical procedure.
• Enhance and complement the skills of third-year residents in various surgical procedures, especially those not predominantly emphasized in residency or fellowship programs.
• Provide ASDS members, who serve as preceptors, the opportunity to raise the level of dermatologic surgery practice through mentoring.

The Visiting Professor Program allows resident training programs to invite approved dermatologic experts to lecture and share their expertise through a scheduled visit. Twelve or more ASDS members will be available for travel on an annual basis. Approved Visiting Professors must meet established minimum requirements for visiting institutions within the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

Collaborating on an approved agenda, Visiting Professors and requesting institutions allow the professor to share their clinical expertise and personal insights. This program enables dermatology residents and practitioners across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico to learn from renowned experts in their own environment on an extremely intimate level.
