Mazatlán is nowadays an important fishing and tourist place. Its port is the most important link of the occidental coast of Mexico with the city of Los Angeles and with Panama. Mazatlán city is located in the state of Sinaloa, some miles under the Cancer Tropic. The port is located over a small peninsula which stands out towards a natural bay, thus separating the shrimp fleet and boat traffic from the beach line which extends towards the north. This sheltered port is the confluence point of the Pacific ocean and the Cortez Gulf, also known as California Gulf, a fishing paradise that has given international popularity to Mazatlán. Mazatlán city has featured a formal port for more than 170 years. In 1828 the Maritime Customs House was established to face the maritime traffic of the city
