The Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis offers Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. training at one of the nation’s preeminent biomedical research centers. The Division consists of 12 doctoral training programs, 10 of which are ranked among the nation’s top 10. The Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) is designed to train the next generation of leaders and increase the number of students from underrepresented groups completing their PhD in the biomedical sciences. The IMSD provides a community for scholars and an environment for open exchange with the program staff, other faculty and fellow students. We also administer the Biomedical Research Apprenticeship Program and the Amgen Scholars Program, which are 10-week summer experiences for exceptional students interested in pursuing biomedical research careers. We are a member institution of the Leadership Alliance and host students in summer opportunities within the social sciences, humanities and STEM areas.
