The Short Term Research Experience for Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP) is a summer research program supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). This is the program’s 10th year and it has trained over 500 students throughout the U.S. and its territories. The program is very unique in that its participants are able to identify the area of research and their mentor of interest at any U.S. university of their choice. In other words, students can choose where and what kind of research they want to do during the summer. The program offers a competitive stipend, free travel, support for career development and connection with a distinctive peer group.
