 Press Releases

  • Nested syringes and vials have made pharmaceutical manufacturing lines more efficient, lowered total cost of ownership (TCO), and added flexibility in fill and finish operations. Now, SCHOTT has introduced nested cartridges to round out its portfolio of ready-to-use (RTU) packaging. The new system will give pharma manufacturers a faster, more flexible, and cost-effective way to fill and assemble cartridges. SCHOTT will showcase the system at INTERPHEX in New York City from March 21-23 at booth 3621.

SCHOTT’s nested cartridges are supplied in a standard tub and nest configuration and can be compatible with existing syringe filling lines or new flex filling lines, allowing manufacturers to fill multiple forms of packaging without the burden of changing over equipment. As a result, manufacturers gain greater flexibility to accommodate new drugs and clinical trials, minimizing the time and cost of producing small batches or even ramping up commercial production.

All cartridges arrive washed, dried, siliconized, assembled with crimp seal, and sterilized, saving further cost, time, and resources for manufacturers. A nested configuration improves overall quality by preventing glass-to-glass contact during filling, transport, and storage, ensuring each cartridge remains free of scratches and contamination.

“Pen injectors, patch pumps, and wearable injectors are pushing drug administration from the hospital to the home and prefilled cartridges are the first choice for primary packaging, which helps patients administer their injections in a safe and easy way using compact, familiar packaging,” said Anil Busimi, Global Product Manager for Cartridges at SCHOTT. “Nested cartridges will enable manufacturers to meet that demand while keeping costs lean and quality high. By expanding our portfolio of RTU packaging to include cartridges, we’re giving manufacturers better ways to fill demand and also meet increasing regulatory pressure.”

Each industry-standard tub holds 100 clean and sterile cartridges by the shoulders to reduce movement, especially during transportation. Nested cartridges will soon be available in various sizes.
